A crippling mosquito-borne disease is spreading at an accelerating rate on the French Indian Ocean island of Reunion, health officials say.

Wow, that’s pretty scary. The good news is that it is non-fatal, but to have so many afflicted so quickly? I want to know more about this virus. It causes high-fevers and stooping over, leading to the name of the disease, chikungunya, the Swahili word for, “that which bends up”.

I find the vector spread of this disease fascninating, the virus must have rapid onset and a short infectious life in order to be spread so quickly. I’ll have to keep looking for more information about this.
